How to Get Rid of Ants

in Pests · 0 comments

Ants might look cute in cartoons where they march in long columns while singing a funny song. In reality, they can literally take over your home and can even bite you or your loved ones depending on the species invading your home. It is important to eliminate the problem instantly since ant colonies can multiply quickly and spread to multiple locations, further compounding your problem.

You could be invaded by carpenter ants, black ants, fire ants, or any of the countless species of ants that inhabit the earth. Certain species of ants found in Australia and Africa can jump several inches before delivering a stinging bite to their victims. If you have extremely tiny openings in your wall with sufficient space behind it to house an ant colony then you should be sure that ants will find it and convert it into their version of collective condos. The queen will keep on churning out new ants into your home at an alarming rate even as soldier ants lift all crumbs left in your kitchen or dining area and take it back to their colonies. You will notice one or several lines of ants lifting food off your kitchen sink or from your cabinets before vanishing through a microscopic hole in a wall.

1. Insecticide Sprays and Powder

If your house has been infested with ants then you will need to take prompt action to drive them out or finish them permanently. You will surely find insecticide sprays in the market that contain DEET or Diethyl-m-toluamide to kill ants quickly. You can spray into tiny holes that you feel have turned into ant residences while taking care to stay away from food. You should also keep the cans away from children and pets. Another effective method of eliminating ants is to spread boric powder preferably with a bait to lure the ants to eating it or carrying it to their lair. Boric powder too needs to be kept away from inquisitive children and pets. Even regular talc is a good deterrent to keep ants away.

2. Homemade Solution

If you do not want to use dangerous chemicals then you can also prepare your own homemade solution consisting of water, liquid soap and alcohol. You can also use a blast of hot water to drown the ants but this could be tricky since water might seep into your walls or wooden flooring and cause mold in the future. You can also mix vinegar with water to eliminate and deter them. You will also find several brands of ready-made ant bait that can kill entire colonies of ants within a few days. If nothing else works then you can always call a professional exterminator to do the job on a regular basis to prevent regular infestation. However, it would be best if you carefully sealed all tiny holes and gaps with caulk and kept your kitchen free of any leftover food. You should also seal your garbage can with a good lid.

3. Ensure Proper Care

Ants are tiny in size but they can overwhelm you with sheer numbers. There are several species that can invade your home but one mode of treatment usually works for all. It is not very easy to get rid of ants due to their persistent nature but a little extra effort and proper care will ensure that they keep away from your home in future.
