Countless people want to know how to get rid of a hangover because nothing ruins a night of fun more quickly than thinking about how you will feel in the morning. Although researchers have yet to come up with a definite cure for a hangover, certain things do help people to feel better. Although the best method of eliminating your hangover is to wait it out, as your body needs time to recover, there are a few things that you can do to lessen the impact that the symptoms have on your body.
1. Rehydrate Yourself
Begin the process by drinking plenty of fluids to rehydrate your body. When you drink heavily, the alcohol acts as a diuretic. This means that it causes you to urinate much more often than you could normally, which can cause dehydration. While water works the best, you might want to drink a sports drink to replace the electrolytes that your body lost the previous night. Drinking these fluids also helps your body to eliminate any alcohol that is left in your body. The more water you drink, the faster you can get back to feeling like yourself.
While there are certain medications that you want to avoid, others can make you feel better pretty quickly. Avoid acetaminophen completely because it can do irreparable damage to your liver when mixed with alcohol. If you have a headache, however, you can take some ibuprofen to ease the pain. For an upset stomach, you can take an antacid to lessen the swelling in the lining of your stomach that occurs after drinking. If your symptoms worsen after taking either one of these medications, cease their usage immediately.
3. Take a Shower
If you feel groggy in the morning, get up and take a shower. The shower will help you to feel more alert, allowing you to face the day with a clearer mind. You will also feel better about yourself, which can help you to feel better physically. While there no scientific evidence supports this theory, you do tend to feel much better after cleaning yourself. It is always a struggle to get into the shower when hungover, but it usually helps considerably.
4. Consume Some Glucose
If you feel weak the night after drinking, it means that you need to get some energy into your body. You can start this process by having some fruit juice. This juice contains some quick sugar to get your blood glucose levels back to a reasonable level. You can also eat some carbohydrates, as they allow you to increase your blood sugar levels on a more permanent basis. The more energy you have, the better you will feel.
5. Eat a Meal
Even if your meal does not contain carbohydrates, get something into your stomach immediately. Food helps you to process the alcohol and puts the nutrients back into your body. The diuretic effect of alcohol forces nutrients out of your body, which is why eating helps you to feel better. Foods with high salt values work well because this is one of the major nutrients to leave through your urine. If you cannot get through a large meal, try to eat some soup.
6. Have Some Coffee
Although coffee might not help your stomach, it can help you wake up and face the day. This is not a permanent solution, but having a couple of cups of coffee can make you feel better temporarily. Remember, however, that coffee also acts as a diuretic, so drink plenty of water at the same time to counteract its influence. You might feel like the coffee is rehydrating your body to begin with, but it will not last.
7. Stay Awake
If you are worried about being hungover in the morning, it is a good idea to stay up later and drink some fluids. If you have a meal and drink a few glasses of water before going to bed, you are sure to feel better in the morning. This does not mean that you have to stay awake all night, but waiting until the effects of the alcohol start to wear off and then eating a meal is a good way to limit your hangover.
8. Get Some Sleep
If you feel hungover, chances are you will be completely useless of the entire day. If you find yourself in this position, you might want to go back to bed and get some sleep. Hangovers can impair your judgment and make it difficult for you to focus on anything. Get some sleep and you will be back to feeling 100 percent the next day. This is not always viable for everyone, but definitely works if you have the chance.
